What is a Birth Buddy?

A Birth Buddy is a doula or birth companion. The word “doula” comes from ancient Greek and is now used to refer to a woman who helps another woman.

It is also applied to childbirth to refer to “a woman experienced in childbirth who provides physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, continuously during and just after childbirth.”

Why do I need a Birth Buddy?

Simply because women supported by a doula during labor have been shown to have:

- 50% reduction of caesarean rate
- 25% shorter labour
- 60% reduction in epidural requests
- 30% reduction in analgesia use
- 40% reduction in forceps delivery
